Just poking my head in here before posting anything of note - old slackware user, made the hop to ubuntu (with a brief stop in regular debianland) for my desktop and stayed with ubuntu mostly because of the 'just works' experience I initially had with all my USB junk. That was a new feeling.
'course the fact that I'm here actually means some of that stopped working and I want to figure out why. I'll search around a bit and then post. Anyway, hi all.

Well, spit! The problem went away. Kernel had been unhappy, apparently, because of a flaky usb cable going to a camera card reader. Unplug that, reboot (had to, don't know why - except there was a big long hex entry in /var/log/messages and the previously mounted devices wouldn't unmount), and now everything except the offending item is happy. I'd been living with the problem for a couple of weeks, and preparation for posting an intelligent question finally led me to do what I should have done in the first place - unplug everything else and see what happens.
So... what fun is that? I was looking forward to getting as many people as possible scratching their beards and getting frustrated with me while trying to solve my problem. Ah well.
Thanks for the welcome, Master_Shake. You're not at all stuck up. ;)

That card reader wouldn't 'voom' if you put 4,000 Volts through it!
Slackware? You were lucky! We used to dream of a slackware installation!
