View Full Version : [ubuntu] SCSI CD-Writer Failure or Patchable Problem?

I'm trying to maintain an ancient box for a non-profit using Hardy Heron (8.04). It's got an hp cd-writer 9100 series for which no setup CDs are available, but Ubuntu got going.

Unfortunately, its now giving "Unsafe Removal" messages under Win2K (dual boot) and causing annoyingly excessive boot-up times under Ubuntu. While booting, the screen flips out of GUI mode into console for a while and the following messages appear, repeatedly. The context of those messages is provided after them. (All extracts below were recorded in /var/log/messages and copied from the current working session to here).

I'm just wondering if anyone might know whether or not this is a case of the CD-writer dying, without cost-feasible hope of repair, or if i might be able to do something simple and cheap to fix this, with, say, a patch or twiddling some cables or whatever.

The "unsafe removal" I think is a bad sign, but I'm not good at debugging SCSI problems. I have a different suggestion.

When the computer does eventually boot into Ubuntu, install the cdrecord package if you don't have it (from Synaptic package manager), and then in a Terminal, type: cdrecord -scanbus

Does the device appear in the output?

Notably, the eject button on the HP CD-Writer drive wouldn't work after the (supposedly) blank disk was inserted, and, the disk didn't show up in Nautilus or as a desktop icon.

I'll try checking cable connections, later, but will still be grateful for any suggestions.

That's really odd. It's definitely a hardware problem.

I would hope that it's the cables, because the drive does indicate it can register properly, so all is not probably lost. Another test you can do: copy a CD to an ISO on disk, preferably one that's pretty full. Insert it, and use this command: readcd f=mycopy.iso dev=1,1,0

If it has problems detecting the drive, try it more than once. See if you can get through all of the data, and how often it would have to retry.

SOLVED

After this box could not longer get past the BIOS' "Checking for IDE drives..." message on boot-up, i finally cracked open up the case (something i am generally loathe to do, not being a hardware type :)).

I then unplugged the HP CD-Writer's cable to the mainboard's controller socket, at the cd-drive end, and powered up again. The box booted-up OK, suggesting the cd-drive or it's connection was indeed causing the slow and failed boot-up problems and attendant error messages.

Knowing this box had been sitting for several months, if not years, unused and unmaintained, before i revived it with Ubuntu, i suspected connector-corrosion from dust or humidity (an all-too-common problem back in the more humid and dusty Saigon). So, i wriggled and unplugged and replugged the cd-drive's data-cable connections at the mainboard SCSI drive-controller socket and on the drive, then booted up again.

All problems cited above disappeared, including the error messages listed at the beginning of this thread. The drive now reads without apparent error. I haven't tried writing to it yet.

Sorry for an inconvenience caused by my procrastination when it comes to playing with hardware. :D :rolleyes:
