hi
Iam not saying this to segregate new users from the experienced ones, cos we all have questions someone can answer iam sure.
I just feel it will give some breathing space to the absolute beginner talk section due to the enormous amount of new threads being opened in there.
Also a question to mods, is the general help section just to give breathing space to the beginner talk section.? I mean,i post questions in both sometimes but cant really differentiate between the two.A new user can get answers for any question in either so why 2 sections then.?
hmm iam just confused maybe.:D

rajeev.

Hi and the sections descriptions say it all to me
General Help
All your general support questions for Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu.
Absolute Beginner Talk
The perfect starting place to find out more about computers, Linux and Ubuntu.
As well new users post in all sections to get more specific help with the issues.
And for a separate section for experience users, that would be any where on the forums, and most of the Other OS Talk as they tend to use other disto's.
This is just my opinion. :KS

The General Help section is much more popular than it used it be, I think it was originally created to separate new users from more experienced users who know the basics of Ubuntu and linux systems. For example, you wouldn't have to explain how to install packages to somebody who knows how to use the system. I definitely see your point, though, this seems to be changing a little. That said, I still think ABT gets more truly beginner type questions than GH.
We also have all the other forum areas for more specific types of questions that those with specific skills tend to frequent. I wouldn't be opposed to an Advanced Help section, but it would need some well defined criteria. At this time, I don't think we want to be implementing any changes to the forum structure until the forum's infrastructure issues are resolved, but I do like your idea.

When I first started on these forums, the only place I visited was the Absolute Beginner Talk, because I was a beginner, and because the other subforums felt intimidating with such advanced topics that were far over my head.
Of course now, I visit lots of technical areas, and I am seeing more "beginner questions" in General Help that what I used to see. People do get confused, especially when just learning the layout of a forum, so I can understand that. But a "Advanced Users Subforum" would be interesting.
We wouldn't have to be so explicit about giving detailed, step by step instructions on how to do something, and things would probably be more technical in there.
But I agree with Rocket2DMn, this should wait until the forum is once again stable, before we start any decision making.

I don't think the forums need another section for the "experienced" after all there is plenty of places a "experienced" user can post already, as overdrank has mentioned.
Absolute Beginners Talk is always busy and creating a new section for the "experienced" would not change this in my opinion.
I guess people like posting in Absolute Beginners Talk because they get quicker replies to their questions. :D

Someone who is advanced can usually search for the problem and solve it pretty easily. I figure if I have the issue there are more having it and usually I am right.
Most of this forum is for beginners with mostly the same questions asked over and over. I bet I could answer those ten questions and cover a good 80% of the questions asked. Another 10% is why is Linux better then Windows or this OS or that or KDE vs Gnome stuff. Most useless stuff.
If there was an advanced forum who would be posting?
How would the poster determine if that was advanced or not?

I feel that the general help section should be made more visible just like absolute beginner talk.
RIght now its second to mac users ? Not really easy to see it IMHO.

I don't normally agree with much of what you say, glotz, but that was probably the best response in this thread. :D
