View Full Version : [ubuntu] losing connection spontaniously

I'm having a mysterious problem with ubuntu - since a while ago my network connection dies on me without any obvious reasons - I still have my IP adress intact but when i try to ping a internet adress it does not reach it. I also tried disconnecting and reconnecting (which is not problem, i get my IP adress through DHCP faily fast). In my frustration, i switched to wicd in hopes that the problem was within NM but the problem persists. I've noticed one odd thing: if i restart X (by CTRL+ALT+BACKSPACE) my connection would return for a little while. but in order to have it working for a longer time i need to reboot.

Now I have *no* idea how to troubleshoot this one, anyone who can guide me?

hello,

sounds like a faulty network card to me, i had a similar problem, swopped out the card and it was fixed

also make sure your ethernet connection is disabled. I've had problems before where i eventually had to disable the wired connection for the wireless to work properly. Try sudo ifdown eth0 or whatever your wired connection is named, and see if it helps.

I have similar issues with my acer aspire one. It needs a full shut down and a 5 minute break before restarting in order to work properly again. So it is probably overheating or is faulty.

Are you guys positive that its hardware related since i get the connection back once i restart X / reboot? i'm going to try a different distro soon and will make sure if its software or hardware related...

Are you talking about a wired (e.g eth0) or wireless (e.g. wlan0)
connection.

Wireless:
Check the output of "sudo iwconfig", especially "link status"

Wired:
Check the output of "sudo ethtool eth0", especially "link detected"

Also constantly check the output of "dmesg".

Restarting X shouldn't have any impact, but you can also
try "ifdown wlan0" and then "ifup wlan0" to "reset" the
interface wlan0 (and similar for eth0).

You can also run "netstat -i" and check if there are any
errors reported (counter in column RX-ERR or TX-ERR).

Oh sorry, it's a wired interface which is why i'm so confused. I'll follow your advice and repost with the output once it happens again.

thanks!

I'm not familiar with how to "ifdowning" a eth connection through ifconfig. ifconfig -v eth0 down seems to be the wrong way to do it :p

I've also tried to connect to a wireless network and the result is the same, trying to connect to a website through firefox gets stuck at looking it up and gets nowhere...

can you try and set your LAN Nic to 100 meg full instead of autodetect, sometimes this gives issues. i have seen this with certain devices. I dont know the exact code to do this, but maybe someone can help.

The wireless on Ubuntu has got better, but if your machine is a newish machine, the drivers might not be compatiable yet with either of your network cards, so it uses a default driver.

I have a HP elitebook 8530P, ububntu is not ready for it, most things dont work yet, just a exapmle :) good luck

Ok, I've started to narrow down the source of the madness. belive it or not, this happens when i play music (I've tested both amarok and banshee - it happens with both). I had a window where i ran the command ping and i could see how it stopped after playing music. The program can be running without any problem, but it seems that I'm doomed to silence. Could this be a pulseaudio issue?

here's my full dmesg:

Note that i enabled wifi in order to make sure that the problem was not from the eth card; now im sure its a software problem.

EDIT: I just did more testing and it seems that this problem happens when sound passes through alsa or pulseaudio. OSS does play music without my network dying on me. wt£@#!

I have a similar problem but it only happens when I plug my DVB-t usb dongle in! I thought it was something to do with the USB bus but I'm not really sure

Hi All,

my issue at last was due to faulty motherboard :(, sad day becuse it was a scrap machine that worked, now its dead. I will have to build a new machine at a later stage to run ubunutu, still dependant on windows..... thanks for all the comments
