Istvan Blahota has developed .deb packages for Maxima and WxMaxima. Click on the following link: http://zeus.nyf.hu/~blahota/maxima/
There you will find i386 and amd64 packages for WxMaxima 0.8.1.
As far as Maxima 5.17.1 is concerned you will find i386 and amd64 packages for Maxima compiled using both Clisp and SBCL. The .deb i386 and amd64 packages based on SBCL while being larger in size are also quicker than the Clisp based .deb packages.
