My Ubuntu 8.10 appears to work normally - including switching users. If I type Ctrl-Alt-f1 I see console 1 and can log in & use the CLI as usual. When I try to return to the GUI with Alt-f7 sometimes it returns, more often it goes to a black screen with mouse cursor. If this happens I have tried Ctrl-Alt-Backspace with no effect. I then have to reboot.
Is there any fix for this or is it a bug with no workaround?
