I'm downloading stuff from some suspicious sites and was wondering if there was a way to scan the file before downloading or if there was even a need to do so. Also, is there a way to check if a file is safe before/ while torrenting?

Thanks. I'm a little reluctant to download as much as I used because I scanned my xp machine with spybot search and destroy and found out I had some spyware and trojans.

Viruses, trojans, spyware, it's all just software. It has to be written (or at least compiled) to target the host operating system. Windows viruses don't run on Linux any better than Windows software does.

There have been only a few known Linux viruses and none are currently known to be "in the wild". You're very safe browsing with Ubuntu, as long as you don't copy those suspicious files over to your Windows box.
