Is it possible to upgrade Ubuntu using a CD/DVD? For example, when 9.04 comes out, could I pop that CD in and upgrade my 8.10 installation?

I read on the testing site, that your idea is possible, anyway you can also upgrade the distribution via web, going to System->Software sources, then selecting normal releases on the last box on the sheet labeled Updates. ;)

this is for 8.10 but i would imagine it will be pretty much the same for any version of ubuntu.

Ok so, if I purchase a DVD of 9.04 when it comes out from Canonical (Most of the time the only internet connection available to me is slow dialup.) that DVD WON'T work?

You can upgrade Ubuntu from both the alternate CD and DVD. You cannot upgrade using the desktop Live CD. Of course upgrading via the internet is preferred when possible.
