No sound through my laptop speakers

Hey i just installed Ubuntu 8.10 on a 64-bit HP pavilion 2500. And i am un able to get sound out of my laptop speakers. i can get some sound out of my head phone jack but it is very low. does anybody have any idea on what could be the problem?

Suppose you've tried right-clicking on the speaker icon in the top panel, then changing your preferences, and checking the volume controls.

If it was recently a windows computer, make sure the speakers aren't muted or turn down low on the windows side. Many people think that that the sound controls on the linux side should fix this, but I had this problem when I installed Ubuntu on my Toshiba Satellite L35, I got tired of the problem installed windows again, turns out my speakers were muted, went back on to Ubuntu and I had full sound.
