Is it possible to install ubuntu by mounting it to a drive with a virtual CD manager, or do i have to go out and buy some disks?

You can try to mount it and then install with Wubi (Installing inside Windows, you'll find an .exe file).

Otherwise, you can also install it by USB stick.

It looks rather compicated, but you could also try this:

My advice would to do what the previous poster suggested. You can download the Wubi exe here:
http://wubi-installer.org/

and if you are already running Ubuntu on some computer and you have a spare USB flash drive, you can go to teh System menu and choose to create a bootable USB flash drive.
