View Full Version : [all variants] GRUB - Error 22: No such partition!

Hello people of the forum.

I am having a scary problem, and I fear I've lost all my partitions. Here's some background:


I have a dual boot setup - XP and Ubuntu 8.10
I'm running with an ASUS P4P800 board
Seagate 250GB SATA hdd
The tower had been on the floor for a while - quite dusty


I moved the computer back up onto the desk today, and opened it up to have a look at dust levels. Before tinkering with anything I switched the machine on and during boot I got a message saying "Overclocking failed". I selected to proceed with default settings and this time booted up XP.

Now on restarting I can't get either operating system to boot at GRUB. Ubuntu gives me an "Error 22: No such partition" and XP gives me "Ntloader is missing".

Can anyone help to diagnose the problem I'm having? I have checked all leads within the box and have done a careful vacuum to remove dust.

Please help!

Do you have a Live CD you can boot to do troubleshooting with? If so, how about booting that, download the Boot Info Script (https://sourceforge.net/projects/bootinfoscript/) to your Ubuntu desktop, open a terminal (Applications > Accessories > Terminal) and do:

sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh
That will create a "RESULTS.txt" file in the same directory from where the script is run, namely your desktop; please copy/paste the contents of that file to your next post, highlight the copied text, and click the pound sign # graphic in the Ubuntu forum message box so that the text will get "code" tags put around it. The results of that script will help clarify your setup and hopefully what the solution to your booting problem might be.

Thank you for the help caljohnsmith. Thank goodness for the live CDs. Interestingly I can still access my file system(s) when I boot this way. Here is the output for boot info script:

It looks like the issue is that in the course of your tinkering, somehow the boot order was changed. Both your sda and sdb drives have Grub installed to the MBR (Master Boot Record), so booting either of those drives will give you the Grub menu; but your Grub's menu.lst is only configured to boot correctly from the 250 GB sdb drive that has Ubuntu and Windows. If you can change your BIOS so that it boots the 250 GB drive again, I think you should be all set. How about giving that a shot and let me know how it goes.

Yay, I'm back in business! Thank you very much for your suggestions and for reading over that report.

You were correct. It was trying to boot an empty drive as the main drive. I wasn't aware that grub was present on it...

I wonder if when I received the "overclocking failed" message, the boot order in BIOS was somehow interfered with?

I'm really glad to hear changing your boot order is all it took to get Ubuntu and Windows booting again, because it's always nice when the solution turns out to be something simple. Cheers and enjoy Windows and Ubuntu. :)
