Once a day, my work computer stalls completely (if I'm listening to something, it sounds like a machine gun) and I have to hit the reset button. Ctrl+Alt+Del does not do anything.
I want to know what causes these daily freezes, so I wonder where to look. I checked /var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages, and neither is providing any clues.

What can I do?

Alt+SysRq+R+E+I+S+U+B will safely reboot the computer, assuming the kernel has not crashed. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace will restart X.
