Blender 2.48?

Is it possible to install it on Ubuntu? Do I have to upgrade mine manually? (it's stuck at 2.46)

I download 2.48 for linux from Blender site. I just untar it and start Blender executive and it works fine. It's stand alone, it's works without installing on OS.

Blender is generally better to compile from source, as it progresses so quickly, and not everything makes it into offishal releces.
