I've used UNetbootin to drop the amd64 desktop ISO of 8.10 onto a USB. Gets all the way to showing the desktop (with 'install' and 'examples') but halts at this point - mouse cursor remains the (no longer spinning) loading icon, numloc does not change the keyboards indicator light, and the UI is completely unresponsive to interaction.

The menu bar at bottom is populated by a large black rectangle at bottom left, and a smaller black rectangle at bottom right.

What are my troubleshooting steps from here?
