I am trying to install ubuntu 8.10 on my dell that currently has Windows on it. I want to totally replace my OS without partitioning. Do I need to format my hard drive before booting on the Ubuntu ISO CD?

If you want to wipe out windows from the harddrive, just tell the installer to use the whole disk when you get to the partition screen. But if you want to partition your harddrive ahead, then you can use gparted from System -> Administration from the LiveCD.

I recently installed kubuntu and ubuntu on the same HDD as windows xp(don't ask, yes, I am that clueless and wreckless). well, now that I have just about everything running in ubuntu I think I am going to only want ubuntu on the HDD. if I reinstall it and choose entire disk option, does it automatically format the HDD? I know in windows every once in a while I would need to just flat out format the drive and reinstall, but is linux so different that it does not need to defrag or have a clean wipe ever?
