Ok, I have a picture of an alloy rim (revy nice!) and has a white background and what i wanna do is make the white background transparent, how am i to go about this? thanx.

You can select the white background and drag it a bit, and then press Del to erase it. If that doesn't work, select the white background (by using the wand select), then go to Select>Invert and then copy what you want, go to File>New and hit Advanced, and select the background as transparent. Then, just paste your image onto it. Voila.
Mind posting the original, so that I could give you a screenshotted tutorial?
