Gstreamer ffmpeg vs Gstreamer Extra Plugins

Hi, I am trying to get mp3 playback and I am not sure if I should install GStreamer ffmpeg video plugin or the GStreamer extra plugins. They both seem very similar so I am not sure if it is safe to install both

tl;dr
I want to know if it is safe to install both ffmpeg and GStreamer extra plugins or if I should only install one of them. I am using Ubuntu 8.10

Don't really use any gstreamer players but I believe the gstreamer-ffmpeg will take care of mp3 playback. You can use as many or few of the plugins you want.
Most people add the bad and ugly (pick one of the muiltiverse packages), pitfdll, and gnomevfs.
