I use the code blocks quite a bit, but I can't code my way out of a wet paper bag. Looking at the forums 90% of the time the code blocks are used for commands or for the output of a command. Calling it a code block also makes the noobies think that you have to be a programmer to do anything on the command line.
Could we get changed to
I had to use a curly bracket to get the code tag to show in the quote. :)

I don't really see that point all that much. I understand where you're coming from but I don't know if it's possible anyway.
And you could have used the tags ;)

Try using the tags to get bbcode to be ignored. Example:
(click the quote button to see the source, if this appears to be confusing.)
I disagree with changing them to tags, as I and many other users type the code tags out by hand, and would be confused if this were to suddenly change.

I do agree that "code" can be a turnoff to new users.

Thanks jenkinbr and Joeb454 for the info on the noparse tag, I didn't realize there was such a thing.
