View Full Version : [ubuntu] Ubuntu Desktops Showdown

Hey Ubuntu lovers/users!
I visited many pages where there were comparations of different distros, witch one is better, faster etc.
I have noticed that Ubuntu is mentioned everywhere, but Linux gurus are recommending others distros over Ubuntu, and one of the main argument is that its ugly...I agree that this is a personal preference, but you don't choose your distro or even OS by its looks. By installing almost all mainstream distros, I could say that they are the same, only difference between them is RPM or DEB package management and package managers themselves, and the desktop theme off course, there is DE, too.
So to cut to the case, I wanted to make a Desktop "surface" showdown, to showoff our desktops and prove to everyone that Ubuntu, like any other distro is highly customizable, and it can look like we want it to look like, that no distro is ugly or pretty, its the way we set it up...

So, Here is my desktop...with Emerald (window decorator theme, Ubuntu studio icons and fedora 7 wallpaper):

Nice Desktop! Can you tell me where I can get this window decoration theme for Emerald? I like it so much.

Thanks, and sorry my bad English.

Bye!

Very nice looking desktop. Here is mine:

[large image snipped...]

I have worked a lot to get it how it is. The black swing arms are just edits to the background image. All effects are screenlets. The dock on the bottom is the AWN dock. The info dock on the right side is gkrellm. I have my current IP, SSH connections, terminal, and all assortment of monitors available. If anyone is interested, let me know and I will post my BG image.

Vistubuntu
I just wanted to see how far I could emulate Vista. Emerald doesn't work for me so I am still using Metacity, but I've got Black Vista window borders, the vista panel, vista start button, vista icons, wallpaper, and even widgets. I also had a near perfect Mac OSX theme that I put together. All of these parts are individual, not one downloaded theme. Soon, I'm going to put together a totally customized theme

Very nice desktops so far! I hope we will see more of them.

Vera_ im sorry, I don't know exactly where I got it, I downloaded a lot of themes lately, but google "download emeralt themes"and you will find a lot of themes for it. Try those gnome, KDE -look.org sites, I downloaded from there, just don't know exactly.

Nice job sirjoebob, it really is "dark", Its too dark for me, but it looks impressive!

11lettenJ, nice project, it has some bugs with the "VIorb", but still good lookin'. If you're into windows look, there is one distro allready setup to look like Vista, it called ViXta, based of Fedora 10, but sadly its one of those RPM distros (witch I dont like very much). For MAC OSX look there is one project called "mac4Lin", it is a complete set of stuff to make your Ubuntu look like MacOSX.

Keep them commin' I like to see what people do with their desktops!

Eyecandy is not my thing, I prefer to stick with the speed of a simple desktop on a fast box:

Theme: Xfce
Icon Theme: Rodent
Use anti-aliasing: Yes
Use hinting: Slight
Use sub-pixel hinting: No
Window Manager Style: Variation

I complement you in posting this, Very true that there is much beauty in a lean, fast desktop.

WOW! beautiful ¿screenlet? down there! how did you do that?

sirjoebob
January 24th, 2009, 11:31 PM
Copitox,

That information down at the bottom would be a highly customized conky layout. conky is a very configurable monitor that has plugins for weather, etc.

Aye, it's a conky setup modified from the scripts found here (http://www.quicktweaks.com/2008/09/27/gmail-weather-beauty-right-on-your-ubuntu-desktop/).
