This is my first post here. The message at the top of the screen told me to say hello.
So.... "HELLO!"
I'm fairly new to Linux. I've used Mandrake 9.1 and Mandriva 10.2...I don't know entirely why I keep going back to windows. Anyways, I now have two computers...so I'll see what I can do with Ubuntu.

Hey :) nice to meet a new face. My advice for getting away for good is to take the plunge and go totaly linux, at first it sounds stupid or obvious to say that but when your forced to use it all the time and can't slip back into bad habits then you learn much much faster. Its like going to france to learn french is much faster than in an english class room where you have little need to use it :D
Better in the long run I promiss
Welcome!

yeah, I made the switch entirely in March with the newest Mandriva at the time. And...I liked it but my wife didn't. I wish I could learn GIMP though. I hear it's an awesome program once you learn it. Anyways, my wife now has her own computer with windows XP Pro on it which I also have set up as an FTP server. And I have a POS running win98 that I can't get google talk on because google doesn't support 98 and trillians jabber protocol isn't working right. I do want a text program exactly like textpad but I haven't found a great one on linux to satisfy my desires.

:D hello I'm another new user, I'm trying ubuntu to extend the usefulness of my old imac as its too slow to run OSX (or so they say) and I like the idea of open software for everybody.
So I'm going through how does this OS work and what extra do I need to really get things running. Is there any forum you can recommend for a new user with a powerpc?
Anyway hello to anybody out there!

Ok, 2 days with kubuntu...
What I've done so far...and why I'm loving kubuntu....
I've installed apache, php, mysql, firefox 1.5, unrar and learned how to unrar with a passworded rar file which goes as follows since I didn't find the answer in this forum: unrar x -pxxxxxx your_rar_file.rar
replace xxxxxx with the password of the archive.
I had a little frustration with my session not quitting apps. I kept getting an error when trying to access KDE config menu's that required root priveleges. I had to close my session and start over...my computer must be sick just like me. The network card was disabled be default so I had to fix that...and then I didn't check the enable at startup check box...then the root password error as I mentioned above. eh!
Anyways, Now...I love kubuntu for one main reason...all the help that is available for it. With mandriva...you have to pay for the help. And...they even have miss-spelled words in their menu's...I'm not paying for help from people who can't spell.
Ok, that's it. I love Kubuntu. I have some CD's of Ubuntu coming soon...I plan to hand them out.

kubuntu has kate and kwrite text editors, though i find kate crashing on me when i try to open it from the konsole. for more advanced text editor there is openoffice.org which is turning into quite a powerful replacement for ms office.
