Sound capture? Where's my mic?

When I click System>Control Center>Sound, it opens up sound preferences. That is as far as I have made it. I get all these options on my capture device, none of which do I recognize (hello, built in mic?)...

I have an hp tx1320 running 8.10 ubuntu...

I'm trying to get my audio to capture via built in mic or headset mic for audacity or for skype...

Can anyone help me? Mock me? :)

This thread may (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=385739) help. I know if you right click the speaker icon and choose open volume control, there are a number of settings available.
