Pretty much that -- I have a Compaq Evo N410c. Ubuntu's always worked perfectly on it, 7.04, 7.10, etc. Recently, about 5 months or so after 8.04 came out (and on 8.10, which I'm trying to run now), whenever I go on battery power, about 5 minutes or so aftewards my CPU is pegged out with... something. I know this because my Gnome system monitor (for the CPU) is completely full.

I can't get "top" in a console to show anything. The system becomes pretty much useless when this happens -- it's still running, the GUI is still responsive, and if I plug it back in, eventually it rights itself.

Any ideas?

No idea. You can try Ubuntu Tweak which will give you GUI options to configure CPU usage under battery (so as to reduce CPU load to increase battery life) and see if that helps. I'm doubtful it will be of use if you're having issues with a process though.
