Take sandpaper to it.

Computers naturally make copies of data in order to work with it. If you want to prevent copying, the best method is sandpaper.

Oh and if you want further explanation as to why DRM (copy protection) is fundamentally flawed take a read through the first chapter of this, free to copy, book: http://craphound.com/content/

Use a waterproof marker and write on the disk; "Do not copy".

if you are concerned of copy, it implies that you will have this CD on a public space. If this is a data CD, it has to be mountable so you can read the content. Except for some advanced data cryptography (encrypted stuff that you alone can decrypt with a passphrase and a complex algorithm), I don't see how you can avoid unwanted copies. Are you sure you want to release this CD ? or is it only for your private usage ?

The only known semi-working anti-copying mechanisms for CDs are ones where they break the redbook spec and do things so that CD-ROM lasers won't read the discs right while (theoretically) cd players can. Even this is inconsistent at best.

And that's just for preventing digital->digital copies, that's not even mentioning the analog hole. The general rule is, if the person can hear the audio, they can copy the audio.

[edit] I can't believe I didn't notice that you said data not audio, heh. In that case you're even more out of luck, because while for audio discs they can target one type of reading to disallow, in this case you're trying to selectively allow CD-ROM reads . . . if we were going to help you, more information would be useful. Is it just that you have data you want to backup or transfer but is sensitive/private? Personally I'm of the opinion that the axiom holds, namely "if they have physical access, there is no security". However, there's definitely some pretty hefty encryption you could run on the data itself. That way people could copy the files on the CD (very hard and awkward to prevent that) but they wouldn't be able to understand them.

I'd suggest starting here for your reading (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pretty_Good_Privacy). For an implemented solution, you might look into TrueCrypt (http://www.truecrypt.org/).

Is this a Data CD with a video file on it, or a DVD?

just write on the cd "this cd is copy protected"

no body will try and copy it then
