Ethernet Unable to Connect

Hey, I just installed Xubuntu 8.10 on my laptop(Compaq Presario R4000). Wireless doesn't work (broadcom card), but I expected that, and figured if I plugged in to an ethernet connection, I could update and then it would work.
On my first attempt, network manager connected, and I began the update process. However, after a few minutes of downloading the list of updates, it stopped. No more connection.
Fiddled around with it a bit, tried to fill in the IP information manually through network manager, still nothing.
So I tried a fresh install. It still won't connect. The light on the port comes on, network manager attempts to get an ip address, and after a minute or two, simply says, "Disconnected."
I'm not really sure where to begin. I'm not what you would call proficient in Linux, so detailed instructions would be great. Any help at all would be wonderful!

Oops, I forgot to mention that I'm dual-booting with Windows XP. Wireless works just fine, and I had previously said that ethernet did as well... But I just doubled checked and it turns out that ethernet isn't working in Windows either. Now I'm starting to think it's a hardware issue... :-/

recommend you look at the output of dmesg or /var/log/syslog to see if there is anything in there indicating problems.

posting lshw may also help....

Alright, here's what I got from dmesg after plugging in the ethernet and letting it do its thing (wait a minute and then disconnect). If there's more that you want somewhere else in the list, let me know and I'll try to get it for you...
