Dell 1300 Sound Issue

Last night, my sound worked perfectly. Tonight, I went to use my laptop and all I get is crackling noises. I'm running ubuntu 8.10. I have no idea where to even start to try to fix this since I'm pretty new to Linux :(

What are your settings for system>Preferences>sound- playbacks

Are all sounds crackling, or just some?

It's set at Autodetect, but I tried all the options and it still crackles. All sound are crackly, some more than others.
