I posted a thread in General Help earlier and for 7 Hours not one reply...Then I come back and repost thinking well it just got lost in the shuffle...Still no reply!!!HMMM. Well I still love Ubuntu and this community but here is my question simple I think... I have a couple of files in a foreign language that I need translated into English. Does Ubuntu have a program that will do that for me? Thanx for any assistance...

A Loyal User still,

Leo

I am relatively new to Ubuntu, but I know there is in fact an entire Linux distro marketed to translators.

As I am not directly answering your question, I won't post links, but I bet if you look at that other distro repository you will find exactly what you are looking for.

Then you can repost about how to get them running on Ubuntu if they are not in Ubuntu repos ;)

Edit- P.S. There are online tools to help as well, but assessing the desktop tools would probably be the most useful approach in the long run.

Well everyone here is volunteering their time for one. Also, if you posted dueing a flurry of posts yours could have fallen off page 1 quickly.

Anyway, you never mention from what language. How big are the files? What format are the files?

Have you tried using Babelfish? Babelfish (http://babelfish.yahoo.com/) is quite useful and totally free. It might not be perfect but it will be a start

You should read some more about :
- well timed posting
- using the "bump" feature

Concerning your OP question, this :

apt-cache search translate

already gives quite some hits, but not sure how much is useful.
Within Synaptic Package Manager you can also use the search option.

But see also here :
http://appnr.com/?search=translate

And remember, the people who read your posting, are basically all volunteers (Assuming that the paid people keeping the server online do read here a bit as well). :)

Yea, I didn't know about the bump thingy but I will check into that...I sat and watched for about 1 hour and my post was still on first page...and yes I didn't post clear enough, I didn't say what languages I was trying to translate and I was very none specific...my bad! All is well, I went on the IRC channel and three guys, exodus-ms, Jack_Sparrow, and bazhang pointed me in the right direction... I went to the synaptic packager manager and downloaded the gnome translator and wala... perfect, just what I was looking for... So I apologize for my ranting and crankiness, It was my fault for not being "Specific".

Another thing to remember is if somebody reads your post and doesn't know the answer, we just don't reply. There is no reason for us to reply with "I don't know." When somebody reads your post who knows the answer they'll probably answer it.

Also, if you post a question and I don't know the answer at all, I could post I don't know. I could say that I don't understand the question, but that I wanted to bump this thread for you. However, 7 hours is not long enough (netiquette dictates 24), and since you don't have any other posts there, it is better to leave it alone simply because there are tools for finding threads with no replies that would be rendered useless. If you really need help, you could ask in another thread that serves that purpose (hint: the BUMP Thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=520091)). Hope this helps.

you should not bump a thread within 24h!

Anyway, here s another app that you might be interested:

StarDic (http://stardict.sourceforge.net/index.php): http://stardict.sourceforge.net/index.php

it is in the repositories. sudo apt-get install stardic

Go to StarDic website and download dictionaries.
