some sound applications work others not

ubuntu 8.10. I get sound with totem media player and rhythm box, but can't get sound with firefox, miro, and other media players. Have followed guides by Markbuntu to get where I am. How should I troubleshoot?

now no sound works. I do not what I did to ruin what I had.
In any case how can ubuntu expect to compete with Windows if this sort of problem takes forever to fix. I have search these forms as well as others to no avail.

Did not work in upgrading to 9.04. Giving up for now.

I have the same problem. I know that doesn't help but at least I reponded. I did get mine to work for one day by changing to an OSS mixer but then it stopped again.

If you installed Intrepid and your sound is sort of working you need some more stuff to get your sound working properly, go here

came back to try more and went back to 8.04. hear good audio over Rhythn Box as before. Seems to me the audio over flash on firefox does not work. anyone any ideas.
The recommendations from Mark Ubuntu does not help. I have tried installed these several times.
anybody any ideas?
