View Full Version : Inappropriate answer telling someone to google for password bypass

I was sent a private message about having an inappropriate answer.

Is telling someone to google to find a bypass for a lost password inappropriate?

I was going to reply with a fix but I also thought that this might be considered as hacking so I replied telling the user to google for the answer.

I asked for a more clear explanation from the individual but have not had a reply yet.

Thanks
Bruce

Hello,

From the forum Code of Conduct here: http://ubuntuforums.org/index.php?page=policy

Try to avoid acronyms and jargon when giving instructions. New, or "green" users may not be able to follow you, and many will not ask you for an explanation in order to avoid looking stupid. RTFM, "Go look on google" are two inappropriate responses to a question. If you don't know the answer or don't wish to help, please say nothing instead of brushing off someone's question. Politely showing someone how you searched or obtained the answer to a question is acceptable, even encouraged.

People forget passwords. This is different than hacking into a machine without someone's permission (even if it's just a joke). The thread you reference indicates that the person is attempting to gain access to a computer for which the password has been forgotten. In cases like this, we have no choice but to give the poster the benefit of the doubt and trust their word that they are not doing this maliciously.

Thanks for following up!

It's my opinion, if some one has to ask how to enable the root password here in the forums, instead of finding the answer themselves, they aren't ready to run as root, and will more than likely be back to either blame the person that gave them the answer or demand that someone fix their system, becuase they screwed something up and have no idea how to fix it.

I am sure others have made this mistake and I think that if an individual is going to send a pm regarding a response it should be backed up with a quote from the COC. Not everyone reads the coc line for line. My mistake was genuine and for someone to send you a pm saying that it was an inappropriate answer when you are trying to help them out without getting an infraction for telling someone how to bypass a password(thinking this could be called hacking) to me this was uncalled for. But you have your rules!! I will probabley not be on here as much trying to help out others because of this.

This is my opinion and only mine!!!

If you receive a PM which you think is out of line, you can use the forum "report post" feature to report it to the staff for review. No one (including myself) suggested that your mistake was not genuine.

This is a Linux forum, not a Windows forum. An appropriate answer to this question would be to refer them to Windows tech support, or quote the official Microsoft answer here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/321305

In all honesty I would have done what the OP did as one 'might' expect an infraction for answering the question. Just my opinion.
