Speakers don't disable when headphones are plugged in

Just got Ubuntu 8.10 setup and everything is working great except for one thing... Whenever I put my headphones in, the headphones themselves play, but the laptop speakers keep playing as well. I can't figure out how to just get the headphones to play... I have a VAIO SR-190 if that helps and am using VLC Media Player.

please post the output of lspci (typed in a console shell) to see your hardware specs.

The speakers were Altec Lansing.

Hopefully the next release of Ubuntu (after 9.10) will fix this issue.
As well as the major regression of: 'no "Do Nothing" on lid close.'
