Holy Schmoly!
Picassa installs without a hitch with the new Crossover office! I love the gimp and use it often, but Picassa is one of my favorite free apps out there. I just tried installing it via the new Crossover Office and it worked without a hitch using a new bottle. I've been messing with it for a few minutes and it works WELL--it recognized my Nikon NEF files without a hitch!
For the photographers who don't know (like me coming from macs), this is probably the easiest way to do batch photo adjustments on Linux now. For me, this was one of the last things I'd wait to do on a mac in photoshop--resizing, auto-contrasting, auto-coloring, auto-website generating for big batches of photos from a shoot.
Have fun with it!

Hey,
Thanks for a tip, I almost gave up with looking for something for editing raw(nef) files.

OK, I worked with JPG files, it worked fine, but raw(nef) files can't be opened :(. They are just black. To be precise I have nikon d300.

Picassa is available for Linux, so I don't think you need to get Crossover office for it.

Just Google Picassa for Linux and you can download a version that includes sufficient Wine for it to run.

Nef are lossles files, but not always, some of them use some compression. It is easier to work on white balance (color temperature) with nefs. After you are done with retouching you save it as tif (these are huge files, ie 30-70MB), but they can be used for printing large formats. JPG's are good for small size prints only. However Google Picasa handle color temperature in JPG files very smoothly.

Phatch is a new application developed on Ubuntu for batch photo adjustments & renaming (based on exif & iptc properties). It allows you to do complex processing with an easy interface. You can just drag & drop files or folders on it. (You can make thumbnails with rounded corners, shadows, perspective, ...) It also comes with good documentation in the help menu. Be sure to read first the getting started page. You can grab an installer for ubuntu at:
http://photobatch.stani.be > free download
If you want the best exif support, you also need to install pyexiv2 (hardy, but also works on gutsy):
http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/python/python-pyexiv2
Here is the thread on the forums where it all started:

Give it a try!
