Just thinking how long it will take before people start realeasing viruses for Vista?
Will Vista get rid of Viruses & Spyware?
And is 2006 the year of the desktop for Linux? How many more people will ditch Windows in favour of Linux?

I dont think Vista will get rid of viruses, and I think spyware is virtually impossible to get rid of without a massive user education campaign (and probably not even then). I do think the number of (serious) viri will be much lower in Vista than in XP, but I'm sure its still not immune. That said, I would give it a month before there is a virus, and 9 months until a major one.

No OS will ever be free of viruses and spyware, and it's unreasonable to think that Vista will even come close to accomplishing this.
As for how long it will take for a first virus to come along? It happened August 4, 2005. You can check it out here (http://news.zdnet.com/2100-1009_22-5819428.html).

Interesting read that they are now also going to have a command line feature, I wonder where this came from? Why have they suddenly decided to go back to the old skool?
I also wonder where the new Visual styles have come from as well?
I reckon Vista will lose M$ more friends. Lets be honest what company out there wants to pay more money out?
All they are trying to do with Vista is make it like Linux & Mac.
From the outside the average home user Joe will think M$ are fantastic, I really really wish we could educate these people more to let them know what crud they are dealing with.

because "the old skool" is actually useful. System administrators want to be able to script things and do remote administration quickly and easily...and that means a good command-line interface. Command-lines might not look pretty to you, but they're a very efficient way of getting things done....

*nix is for rebels. MS is for conformos.
Useing *nix would loose some of its excitement if all of a sudden everybody started useing it.

Sure, Linux might, but all of the really elite people use BSD anyway. :)

*nix will never be a widespread home user OS it's somewhat difficult for the average Joe and doesn't have the corporate backing necessary to make it easy (read standartized package installation) but that's not where I see this OS anyway, I see it in the workplace it definetly belongs there much more than Windows.
Vista is supposed to fix some problems, and it will be more difficult to bring it down with viruses the same way as it was with XP but it still has ActiveX so.....

I dont know, probably every virus writer is working along the deadline fo vista... it would be very funny to see, a virus warning in the vista homepage, hours before his release...

Well the first Vista technology specific attacks have already been released - I'd say
Vista stands to be the same mess that currently can't last more than 5 mins without becoming part of a botnet as XP is currently.

Not long, they may already appear before the release (based on the beta). Actually, there is a malware out for it already. In an interesting twist, the Sony DRM rootkit seems to completely break a Vista system when installed on it.
Will Vista get rid of Viruses & Spyware?
Unlikely, it has a better protection against it, but MS has a tendency to default to insecure behaviour to make it easier on users. I suspect that most users will still run Vista as admin...

Linux has seen a gradual rise since the start, 2006 will be no different, but on 31 december 2006 we will not celebrate Linux world dominace day ;-)
