How can I see where I`m up to

So I`ve installed and done a apt-get upgrade but somewhere in the process I`ve lost my terminal window.

My wifi card is going mad and I can`t open the synaptic gui which leads me to believe that the update process is still going.

When I last looked it still had 20 mins to go. How can I see where I`m up to?

though a bit noddy, the network history on the System Monitor would give you a good indication if you are either still downloading loads of data and /or your cpu is busy processing - this under Admin.
But I'm sure there is a better route....
