Compiz

I have a question about compiz. Does anyone know how to get the software to work on an Acer Aspire 3690-2196? The video in the laptop is an Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950. Here's the thing, I actually had compiz working in the ubuntu 8.04 version. Then I upgraded to 8.10, everything seems to be running smoothly. I have compiz installed, but compiz doesn't show up under (Applications--System Tools) any more; and when I read some posts about some problems similar to this and tried to follow there instructions, but every time I try to enable "Extra" under "Visual Effects" tab, in the "Appearances." I get an error every time. I have posted it in an attachment for anyone to look at. Any suggestions?

Sorry here's the error. I can't make a screen shot of this one. It says "Desktop effects could not be enabled."
