Here is my setup, 1 1080p TV connected via a VGA cable and one 17inch CRT also connected via vga to a Geforce 5200 running 8.10.
When ever I connect both monitors they automatically duplicate. Although in nvidia-settings it does detect both displays. I've tried countless different configurations but no matter what I do the screens always duplicate. Maybe this is a limitation of the video card, but I can have 2 displays with the tv output, and I have used that before. I am perplexed...

Hi -- I know that with Nvidea cards it's a little different, but in my setup, to have dual screens instead of cloned screens, I have to add a "Virtual 2048 768" line in my xorg.conf file. Last time I was reading some posts about it, someone was explaining how to enable the extra resolution properly with Nvidea cards.
maybe Google: "Nvidea screen resolution problem ubuntu" or "screen resolution problem ubuntu". I know for sure there are recent posts dealing with this issue.
