kalarm audio

I am using xubuntu on an old laptop and am trying to get kalarm to work. It seems to be working however when I try to have it play an audio file as an alarm, the sound does not play when the alarm is triggered. At first I got an error message that it could not find kmix. After installing kmix the error message is gone but still no sound. Sound from other programs work fine. Any ideas please let me know.
