Will Ubuntu automatically detect a new monitor?

Hi;

I am using Ubuntu 8.10 at home.
I would like to buy a new monitor ( combo PC & TV monitor ) for my system.

Will Ubuntu automatically detect this monitor and adjust itself?

If not, what will I need to do to get everything working?
