Hi, I want to know if DSL is a good start for hosting your own server?

Like the internet connection? I am currently changing my internet to DLS. I have broadband right now. I did it cause my current ISP has rules against hosting your own servers.

I plan to get a static ip and want to know what is the max that I can have views on my site at one time?

Does DSL do a good job when a site is just starting out.

I would also like to know when the site does pick up more viewers and starts to become popular when do you switch from a ISP to a NSP so you can have many views looking at your site?

I was told that DSL has not bandwith limitation.

Also is dsl nothing but the same phone lines? Just want to know if DSL is the way to go.

I have like 4 computers that will be using the internet. One is a server the rest are personal computers that my sisters and dad own.

My sisters been complaining that there video is choppy. Like if they want to watch a TV show on the internet the video is choppy when played at times and the download is slow.

So I want to know what you guys think of DSL connections being used for a server and the rest of the users?

Broadband is a bit of a confusing word to use here perhaps, afaik it covers both cable-modem and DSL.

I think it's a good idea to tell people here a little bit about your location, then people in your area can give you specific information.

I've been using mail-servers via a DSL-connection in the past, usually 8 Mbit downstream DSL lines, but not for so many users, perhaps 5 till 10 concurrent email-users, and about the same amount of people surfing the internet on that DSL-line.

In general it's important for your results to look at the upstream speed that your ISP offers.

I'm running multiple servers on a single 5 Mbps DSL business server account. It works fine.

Cheers,

Herman

the upstream is the essential part if you want to run it on your dsl connection.

Depending on what you plan on serving up to the world, something like www.nearlyfreespeech.net may provide an alternative. I haven't used them for anything, but was thinking about giving them a try to host some media.

The upside is that power outages at home, sisters downloading huge files/streaming video etc all have no affect on your server since its located elsewhere.

I'd be interested if anyone here has used nearlyfreespeech. I'd like to know if it worked out for them.

thanks... I am getting a dsl connection at 8mbps for both upload and download.

I am getting Sdsl.

I talked with the internet engineer of the phone company that I am getting dsl with.

I told them I plan to host my own server.

The reason I want to host my own server is so I have no limitations to what I can put on the website.

I also might host other websites for people. I am not sure.

I am really trying to make money off my website and other ways to make money.

The reason in my state being michigan I can't find any job. I do have a comptuer technician certificate.

I applied to every repair shop in my area and never got a interview.

I have a international standard certification.

So I heard alot of good things about dsl.

Is there anything I should ask the internet engineer about?

I already bought a static-ip address. it's 3 bucks extra.

I will also have 4 computers using the same line with my server.

So I want to really know what I should be asking the phone company about.

If you get two IP addresses, then you can run your own DNS as well. I host email for a number of small businesses on Citadel, a few web sites on Apache and a zoo of MS Windows 2003 virtual machines with accounting software. Small businesses access the accounting schtuff through Remote Desktop. All the servers are in my basement on UPSs.

thanks for the replies.

ya I live in the detroit area well north of detroit. I live in michigan.

My dsl connection according to the internet engineer. He told me I won't have a problem.

I will have unlimited bandwith with speeds up to 8mbps for upload and download which is known to be sdsl.

I told them I plan to host website by my own server and asked if there is any restriction and would the dsl connection support my server load.

they said yes and they have no policy against hosting your own server. They said to ask for a static ip which will be a 3 dollar extra charge.

Hey HermanAB, wow nice. Why do you need 2 ip addresses?

I have my own dns server. I thought you need a direct backbone network in order to host domain names.

don't you have to regsiter the domain names with the national domain group?

I pay for my 2 domain names.

I have my own dns server. I just thought you need a backbone direct connection to the internet.

am I wrong? How would I be able to just host my own domain names? just by having a domain name and at internet connection that is it?
