Rather than start a new post, I take it this is the 'tinny' sound problem? I have an iMac 8,1 running 8.10 and although I have sound, its that poor I use OS X for anything that needs sound. Or am I missing something?

There is a subwoofer in certain macbooks that is not activated in Linux. I believe there is a bug report on this. You might try the jaunty alpha and see if it works there or not.
