I was kicking around the idea today of getting a netbook (aa1 or eeepc) and was researching different linux options for them. 2 of the biggest complaints/worries seemed to involve the hard drive. I was wondering if anyone knew of any netbook flavors that would boot entirely into ram and save your settings when you are done? thereby bypassing the problems that people have with hard drives (too much writing, freezing glitches) My first thought was slitaz but slitaz doesnt seem to have wifi support for the aspire one. any thoughts?

Try these:
eeeTiger (http://www.puppylinux.org/downloads/puplets/eeetiger)
Pupeee (http://puppylinux.ca/members/Pupeee/)
These are custom version of Puppy made specifically for the eeePC.

I'm running eeebuntu on an eee pc 900 (900 Mhz Celeron, 2 Gb RAM, 16 Gb slow MLC SSD) and have never experienced freezes during use except when I was using the originally installed Windows XP.
If you can find one of the models with the faster 4 Gb SLC SSD and the secondary 16 Gb MLC SSD you would be in much better shape.
Personally the whole reason I avoided the Aspire 1 was because it looked and felt like cheap flimsy plastic. You may prefer it though as, I admit, the keyboard is much easier to use (nearly full-sized keys). If you're a touch typist, then the EEE will be a big adjustment.
If you get one of the HDD versions, then the point about the SSDs is moot as you won't have to consider read/write speed issues that SSDs suffer from.

i recommend pupeee. it doesn't even need to be installed. just load the live cd on your regular computer and install to flash drive. it will still load into memory.

I highly recommend the current version of Puppy over Pupeee, which is a little outdated. It is very easy to get the current Puppy release working on the eee: http://www.murga-linux.com/puppy/viewtopic.php?search_id=766174037&t=34159
If you run Puppy from USB, SD, or a frugal install on your SSD, it will load to ram and be very fast.
I personally prefer SliTaz to Puppy in general, but I was not able to get SliTaz working right on my eee 900ha.
ps Drive speed on the eee varies considerably from model to model. Some of the cheaper models, like the $299 Target version, have very slow drives, but others, like my 900ha, use a standard sata hard drive that is just as fast as a "regular" laptop. I have never experienced any slowdown or "freezing glitches" like you're worried about. Also there are blazingly fast aftermarket SSDs available for a few extra $$. I am running a full ubuntu-based distro on my eee with no problems.
