It's probably been a few years since I've laid eyes on a copy of this magazine. I used to pick it up @ Tower Records 2-3 times a year.

I hadn't thought much about it in a long time, however I came across an online ad for it (http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/distrowatchsubs.html) just now.

After reading the ad, I recall how I'd wanted to subscribe in the past. The reason I didn't, was because it's a tad expensive. Actuallly, it's more than expensive, it's downright overpriced.

Granted I'm in the US and the magzine is UK-based but heck, if I were in the UK it wouild still be overprriced.

The following I copied and pasted from the ad itsef (http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/distrowatchsubs.html).:

UK: £13.71 every 3 months by Direct Debit - save 35%! *
UK: £54.84 - that's a massive saving of £29.53 over the year! *

Europe: €106 **
USA/Canada: US $134 ***
Rest of the world: £82.37

* Saving based on 13 issues of Linux Format (DVD edition) bought at the UK newsstand.
** Payment will be debited in Pounds Stirling (Europe £71.32).
*** Payment will be debited in Pounds Stirling (USA/Canada £76.50).
Exchange rates correct at time of offer launch, December 2005. Payment by credit card only.

I buy Linux Format at my local Barnes & Noble for about $15. I've thought of subscribing but decided against it based on the fact that, while some issues are truly outstanding, just as many (about half) consist of things I really don't care about. Why pay so much money for something I don't want? I think I buy about 4 of them a year, sometimes more. They have some very good tutorials, but the thing I'm really after is the dvd that comes with the magazine. I've gotten some great Linux experience out it, including my first taste of Ubuntu.
Other magazines are Linux Pro, and Linux Journal (I might have the name wrong); I think I see about five or six altogether in B & Noble, but their appearance is intermittent and sometimes late. I think some only come out three or four times a year.

Linux Journal is more geared toward the Enterprise user instead of the ordinary home user. I've never felt compelled to buy it, however they do have some useful stuff on their web site.

The magazine you didn't mention that I think is pretty good, is "Linux Magazine (http://www.linux-mag.com/)". One of these days I may subscribe to it.....

I've never actually installed a Linux distro from CD/DVD that wasn't one I downloaded myself or (in the case of Mandrake in the late 1990's) purchased at a local retailer. I've been blessed with broadband since 1999 and just find it simpler to download (often times you also get a more current version that way as well).
