I followed a guide here (http://anuragbansal.wordpress.com/2008/05/10/how-to-get-different-wallpapers-on-each-workspace-in-ubuntu/) to have a different wallpaper on each side of the cube. Well it kinda worked, except on one desktop it's just all black, but the other three are all the way I wanted it to be. Does anyone know a solution to this?

The first thing you should try is to change that one wallpaper (just to see if another one works), could be a bad image/size issue.

i experimented with the multiple desktop for a while , but due to the fact that we cant use icons on the desktop , i want to go back to the old one. ok , now i have deleted the multiple desktop from the compiz settings but i still cant seem to get my icons on the desktop. Can anyone help? thanks in advance.

Try ALT-F2, gconf-editor, apps -> nautilus -> preferences, and check "show_desktop"
