To get the Installer on an USB Memory stick:
https://help.ubuntu.com/7.04/installation-guide/powerpc/ch05s01.html#boot-newworld
If you mean, that you want to install a System on an USB Memory Stick... well you can do it (and i did), but the System is quite slow, if you want to run a Desktop

Well, if you want, you can try following:
1. Insert the CD-Installer, and boot the computer holding CD
2. Choose to install Ubuntu on the USB Memory Stick
3. After the installation, start again the Computer. If you get again only to macOSX, try restarting and hold the Option-Key down. You should see a Linux Icon. Choose it and start from it.
Let me know, if you succed, and how fast (slow) is the system

I think it will be great if you can get it to work but I have always heard that a ppc mac will not boot from a usb connection. I think they will boot from a firewire connection. It was something about mac not reading fast enough. Good luck I would like to do it also.

Yes, you can boot from a USB Memory Stick (or from any USB-HD). It is not so difficult - but very slow... I tried it some months ago on my PowerMac g5

hmm. Is that because memory sticks can't be read as fast as CDs? well, I don't mind that. I just want to stop the annoying spinning noise when I use it.
Er, how much space will be needed for the install on my flash drive? It's only four gigabytes...
Also, I'm looking for ubuntu 8.10 for ppc as a live cd and can't find the ISO.

AFAIK, there hasn't been a final Live CD for 8.10 ppc released. I'd suggest trying 8,04, if you wish a Live CD image.

aw that's a shame. so I will have to settle for 7.10 for live cd persistence.

Forgive my noobish reply, but what is wrong with Hardy? I haven't installed it yet, but I have been able to run the live disk in my G4 mini with no issues.
