I would like to plot some formulas from the secondary school. For instance, I would like it to draw a given ellipse ( x^2/16 + y^2/25 = 1 ), an hyperbole, a parabola and conics in general. Is there any software that is simple and easy to use to get this task accomplished? Thanks in advance.

You can look at the following.
gnuplot http://www.gnuplot.info/
matplotlib http://matplotlib.sourceforge.net/
octave http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/
scilab http://www.scilab.org/
i am sure there are many more. All the above are present in the ubuntu repositories.

@stumbleUpon: Thank you.
In the meantime, starting from your suggestions, I have found a few other applications, whose my favourite ones are now the following:
Geogebra (available for Linux and for free) at http://www.geogebra.org/ (it works great on Intrepid Ibex)
Kig (in the repositories)
WxMaxima (for polynomials and abstract Algebra, in the repositories as well)
Running these three applications, I do not need to run Derive for Windows in Wine anymore.
Whatsmore, Geogebra is far better when you have to (or simply you would like to) change colors, views and zoom factors.
HTH others looking for the same educational applications. They all provide great internationalization/language support.
PS: PEplot is truly interesting!
