Hi, I was trying to install ubuntu 8.10 on my imac and when i put in the install disk it doesn't load the desktop but an ubuntu sign comes up then a thing where it has me select my language pops up automatically without me touching anything. I try to click enter for english but I guess my keyboard isn't supported (its a mac one) so I decided to wait for the 30 seconds for it to default load english and it just sits there, I had it sit there for a half hour and nothing happened. I have tried the x64 version, the x32 version and both the x32 and x64 alternate install versions, all do the exact same thing, they freeze on the language selector. I can tell once the 30 seconds are over the cd tried to do something but then it keeps trying and trying but then stops. A week ago I completely reinstalled everything on my computer. I set up 3 partitions on the Leopard install disk, 89 gbs for leopard, 40 gb for windows 7 beta (which is very cool), and 20 gb for linux. I have tried installing the REfit bootloader with no luck. I really do not want to go back and reinstall everything but I will if thats what it takes to install ubuntu. I have a 2.0 ghz imac core 2 duo, 17 inch, 3 gb of ram, 160 gb hard drive, ati x1600 graphics, or other words, the lowest line imac that i bought one 2 weeks prior to when the new aluminum ones that came out a couple years ago (which i still hate myself for doing). Can somebody please help me? Oh, and i really don't want to install ubuntu with paralells or vmware fusion, i have had a very bad experience with both of them.
Thanks

I had something similar I believe a couple of months ago before I did my own ubuntu install on my laptop when I tried to install on a friends computer.
Do you have a spare USB keyboard lying around? Try running the installer with that and then getting your own keyboard running later in the install or when the OS boots.

Make sure that you have all updates installed in OSX. There was a firmware update that mostly fixed this issue a long time ago.
second, try plugging the keyboard into a different port, and unplug other USB devices. they will sometimes conflict.
Lastly, in order to properly identify your mac version, please check the information in the "Before you Post" link in my signature.

I've got the same problem and plugging the keyboard into a different port does not resolve the issue.
I'm using a 1st generation Intel iMac with the newer aluminium keboard (which I know is not recognised at boot time and there still hasn't been a fix for this), however I'm using the Apple Remote to access the CD drive and select the CD and as tmt345 says it freezes on the language selection screen.
I currently do no have access to another USB keyboard so any suggestions would be most welcome as I would really rather do a clean install as my HD has gathered a lot of clutter that I'd rather get rid of.

Please see the "Before you Post" link in my signature in order to properly identify your Mac.
If you truly have a 1st gen Intel iMac, then it should have come with a white keyboard...
Make sure you have all the updates in OSX
Make sure to unplug other USB devices, as discussed above.
If you still have a non-functioning keyboard then you will just have to get a different one or complain to apple about their firmware.
