I have a Macbook Pro from 2006. I also have a usb thumb drive.

I have a live CD that I booted from and tested it out and everything works great.

I want to run Ubuntu from the thumb drive now.

What is the simplest way to do this? Thanks a lot!
And please try to explain it thourougly because I am a retarded noob.

Firstly, what you are trying to do doesn't work at all for most people. The typical way to install Ubuintu and run it WILL NOT work. You can TRY to use grub-efi. Good Luck!

Its actually really easy. When in your livecd plug your pendrive in. In the menu bar go System/administration/create a USB startup disk. The persistance feature allows you to save your data and not have a temporary session like a livecd. Follow that that through and voilą: you have Ubuntu on a pen drive.

At this point I would like to point out the disadvantages of this as I use it and find it slightly less than what I need.
1) from what I can tell it is more akin to a livecd than a full installation. You automatically boot into "live cd user" and there is the big install button from the livecd.
2) in my experience it takes longer to boot this way.
3) to do this on a mac you need a USB boot cd. Download one at http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-boot-cd-for-ubuntu-810/.

Thanks!

1) So can you download apps and save files and have them available the next time you boot?

2) How much longer does it take to boot up?

Save files, yes. As for apps, I can't see any reason why not but I can't connect to the Internet in Ubuntu on either the livecd or my pen drive or even when I installed it on my Mac's HD by accident and had to restore from Time Machine so I don't know.

It takes about a minuite and a half for me but I reckon that dependson the read/write speeds of your flash drive.
