I have been trying to install ubuntu on an old iBook G3, but can't get the cd to boot up after restart.
i've tried many other distributions as well, but have had no luck.
I hold down C, or Command, and the CD starts spinning, but it just shows a sad mac, and it starts booting into OS X.

The first question is have you burned the disk correctly? When I burn a disk on my Mac I start with the download on the desktop. I open Disk Utility and click on burn. It is in the top left corner on mine. Then in the window that comes up I choose the ISO from my desktop. It tells me to insert a disk. Then I burn it.I let mac verify the burn and I have an image. If when you double click on the disk icon that is now on your desktop you see only 1 ISO file it is not burned as an image and you will need to burn it correctly.

Which version of Ubuntu are you trying to install; are you using the Live or Alternate iso burned to CD? When burning to CD, did you use a CD-R burned as an image at a slow speed? If you burned the Cd from your Mac software, http://psychocats.net/ubuntu/maciso may be of some help to you. Also, on the iBook G3, how much RAM does your system have? You need a minimum of 384 mb to boot from the Live CD to install, and 256 mb to boot and install from the alternate CD.
Other thoughts: have you cleaned the lens on your CD drive lately?

Well I was using the live CD up until you said that, i just downloaded the alternate one and am trying it now.
I put it in an external firewire DVD drive, and when i press command, i get the bootup part but when i click on it and click next, the same screen just loads again. Otherwise, it won't work with the CD on the computer

Take a look at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=698290 concerning booting from a firewire drive. Good luck.
