How would I start up applications in specific workspaces when I login? I would want something to the tune of this:
Amarok (Maximized) in Workspace 2
Pigin in workspace 3
Xfire (Wine App)in Workspace 3
System Monitor in Workspace 5

You can try devilspie (http://burtonini.com/blog/computers/devilspie). Its configuration can be a bit daunting in the beginning, but it if you read the documentation it should all make sense. Some window managers, like Openbox, also allow you to do this without any additional applications.

If you are using desktop effects, take a look at the "Place"-plugin.

Actually the Place-plugin together with Window Rules-plugin do pretty much the same things Devilspie can do and a bit more.
