My ibook G4 wont boot from the install cd for Ubuntu 8.10. I have tried all of the usual tricks such as holding c while booting, the option key while booting.
I am completely new to this and could really use some help

My Ibook came with 256Mb of ram. That is not enough to boot the live disk. Have you added ram? I put in 1 GB and Ubuntu runs great. There are some other issues with booting. On the 8.04 disk you have to press the tab key when you first start to get a yaboot prompt and type in I believe [live-video-powerpc] and it will bring up the desktop. When you say it won't boot we don't know at what point you are having trouble.

i have the iMac G4 PowerPC, I would not recomend switching if you cant live without flash, linux games(xcept games based on the Quake3 engine in that case you have to compile them).
If you know you absoloutly want to install Ubuntu 8.10 on a PPC donwload the iso... since Ubuntu doesnt officially support PPC the community picked up on Ubuntu's slack
download this ISO
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ports/releases/8.10/release/ubuntu-8.10-alternate-powerpc.iso
then open up apples disc utility. click the iso file thats on the side of it and click burn at the top.
The CD your burning it to must be a CD-R and 700MB.
restart ur computer hold in C now the installation will work

Be sure that the iso is burned to the CD-R as an image, and at low speed (4x works well for me). I would also recommend checking the md5sum of the iso before burning it.
