I did a search and didn't see anything resembling this thread, so hopefully this isn't a topic that's been done to death.

Ubuntu has a reputation for being a user friendly distro. What's on the other end of the spectrum? What Linux distro gets your vote for being the distro that you shouldn't even bother trying unless you really know what you're doing?

Gentoo or Slackware, but keep in mind that the reverse is not true: many "power users" use distributions that are usually considered "newbie distros". Linus himself, for example, said his primary distro is Fedora.

LFS is not a distribution, that's the point of it.

Or is it a distribution that doesn't exist until you make it. Hmmm...

;)

The point of Gentoo is that you want to understand what you are doing.
What you are really looking for is Gentoo Hardened.

Gentoo and Arch, although I have never used Gentoo.

Irony?

I would say CRUX. Pure manual bliss :D

Gentoo also applies, but I don't like it much.

I'd have to say Gentoo, then FreeBSD. Those are both pretty difficult. I know FreeBSD isn't Linux per say, but it is still tough to figure out.
