I currently have Ubuntu on it. It runs, but it can drag a little.
I've tried Puppy Linux, but I don't think the computer is bad enough to need it.
Here's the specs:

What can you suggest for a speedier OS that isn't all cut down? (like DSL, SliTaz or Puppy Linux)

You could try Fedora or Redhat, i have similar hardware in my laptop and Fedora ran great on it, i prefer ubuntu though, so i switched back.
so just google into either distro's website and download and burn yourself a cd and see how it goes.

If you like Ubuntu, consider using a lighter DE.
XFCE and LXDE are good options.

I really recommend CrunchBang 8.10 if you're looking for a lighter, faster, "hipper" alternative to Ubuntu. It uses the same core system, but Openbox instead of Gnome.

I use Xubuntu on my Athlon XP 3800+, and it works pretty well. If you're willing to use a more setup-intensive distro, Arch with LXDE, XFCE, or OpenBox should work pretty well. Or take a look at distrowatch.com and try to find something that uses XFCE or LXDE as its default desktop manager.

You computer is good enough to run most Linux distros pretty nice, but maybe not so fast. The distros below should be slightly faster for you then most distros):
Chakra: http://kdemod.ath.cx/download-iso.html (Uses KDE 4 but is still fast, for a speed boost try KDE 4.2)
Arch Linux: http://www.archlinux.org/
TinyMe: http://www.tinymelinux.com/doku.php
PCLinuxOS: http://www.pclinuxos.com/
Fluxbuntu: http://fluxbuntu.org/
Dreamlinux: http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/ (Xfce)
The following distros may be a little slower, but works nicely:
Ubuntu: http://www.ubuntu.com/
Xubuntu: http://www.xubuntu.org/
Edubuntu: http://edubuntu.org/
Mythbuntu: http://www.mythbuntu.org/
Fluxbuntu: http://fluxbuntu.org/
Linux Mint: http://www.linuxmint.com/ (Either, GNOME, KDE 3 (not KDE 4), Xfce, Fluxbox)
Fedora: http://fedoraproject.org/
openSUSE: http://www.opensuse.org/en/ (GNOME, Xfce or KDE3 edition)
Those are the distributions I recommend. Now try to find one that fits YOUR needs!

This is where something like Xubuntu or FLuxbuntu is really useful. You have plenty of cpu to run about anything, but memory only 512 mb is enough to run regular Linux distro but it will be slow unless you use Slackware or Debian or Arch.
I would add another stick of 512 mb of ram personally but if not use a light weight distro it does not have to be as light as Puppy or DSL in your case though.

SliTaz.
EDIT: Vector is also a good if slightly outdated choice.

I have a somewhat similar system, dell gx240 1.6ghz 738mb ram, ati rage 128 video, Kubuntu runs good in it. I had an older desktop 400mhz celeron system that I donated to my wife's daycare where she woks. it has mandriva 2009(kde4) and it runs well. That same computer ran dreamlinux at one time and it ran well also
